Valentino ritornò a Castellaneta solo una volta. Era il 20 settembre 1923 e Castellaneta fu solo una tappa di una sua lunga vacanza in Italia. Poiché amava fare fotografie si fece ritrarre spesso nelle diverse città italiane. Qui a Castellaneta si mise in posa davanti al portone della sua ultima abitazione, in via Regina Margherita 28, dove abitò prima che la famiglia si trasferisse a Taranto.
Tutta l’emozione del momento per il ritorno a casa, nelle sue parole [Mio diario privato]:
“Di nuovo a casa. Il paese in cui sono nato! Il luogo favoleggiato, cantato, sognato e accarezzato! Di fatto credo che il luogo di nascita sia soprattutto una questione sentimentale. Poiché in molti casi, come nel mio, solo nei primissimi anni si vive nella città in cui si è nati, mentre gli eventi importanti e significativi accadono molto più lontano. Ciononostante siamo tutti abbastanza egoisti da considerare la nostra nascita come un evento talmente solenne da circondare il suo scenario con l’odore della santità”.
Valentino returned to Castellaneta only once. It was the 20th September 1923 and Castellaneta was only one stop during a long holiday in Italy. Since he loved taking photos he often had his picture taken in several Italian cities.
Here in Castellaneta we find him standing in front of the main entrance of his last house at 28, Via Regina Margherita, where he lived before his family moved to Taranto. All the emotion of his return home is expressed in his own words [My Private Diary] :
Home again! The town that I was born in! the place that is fabled, storied, sung, sentimentalized over, revered and poked fun at! As a matter of fact, I do suppose that the town one is born in is largely a sentimental matter. The sentiment of tradition. For, in many cases, as in my own, only the earliest years are lived in the town one is born in, and all of the really important and significant events of one’s life take place very far from the natal spot. Still, all men are egoists enough to believe that the event of their birth is a very important matter and so surround the spot with “odor of sanctity”.
